Genitourinary Pathology

The Genitourinary Pathology service provides consultative services for biopsies and resections involving the genitourinary (GU) system. The team evaluates numerous prostate, renal, and other genital system lesions both benign and malignant. Expertise is also available for translational research in urologic pathology including murine models of prostate cancer.

Techniques

Expert interpretation of microscopic pathology, including core needle biopsies, open biopsies and excisions
  • Correlation of pathology with clinical markers
  • Biomarkers in urologic pathology including carbonic anhydrase 9 (CA9)
  • Electron microscopy
  • Cytogenetics
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) for selected common translocations

Education

In addition to residency training in urologic pathology a fellowship in diagnostic and experimental urologic pathology is offered.

Research

Research focus is on translational aspects of human prostate and renal cell carcinoma and animal models of prostate carcinogenesis. Dr. Said is the director of the prostate core for the UCLA prostate SPORE.
