Molecular Pathology & Cytogenetics

The UCLA Diagnostic Molecular Pathology performs a wide range of diagnostic nucleic acid-based tests for hereditary disorders, cancer diagnosis and management, and other conditions. As one of the first facilities of its kind in the country, we pioneered applications of diagnostic DNA-based testing for a wide variety of genetic and neoplastic diseases, as well as DNA fingerprint analysis. In addition to its clinical service role, the laboratory has been very active in basic and applied clinical research.

The UCLA Cytogenetics laboratory is headed by three American Board of Medical Genetics certified Cytogeneticists, and staffed by 20 California-licensed Clinical Cytogeneticists Scientists (CLS). Our lab performs cytogenetic analysis for both our in-patient population, community based physicians and independently run pathology laboratories, which includes a high volume of hematological cases. State-of the art technologies are employed, including molecular cytogenetic techniques, such as standard and multicolored FISH, array comparative genomic hybridization for a wide range of clinical settings from prenatal and postnatal diagnosis to cancer.

Services:

Detection of cytogenetic abnormalities in leukemias, lymphomas and solid tumors by standard and molecular cytogenetics on fresh and archival tissue

Prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of microdeletion syndromes and numerical aberrations

Array comparative genomic hybridization for detection of copy number variants

Identification of mutations in cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome, familial breast/ovarian cancer (BRCA1/2 genes), hereditary thrombophilias, Huntington disease and other genetic disorders

Prenatal sex determination and Rh typing, and determination of paternity, twin zygosity and surgical specimen identity by DNA fingerprinting
