Autopsy

The autopsy service performs the important functions of determining the immediate and the underlying cause of death. Autopsies evaluating the whole body or select organs (such as brain or heart only) are performed by autopsy pathologists and consultant pathologists as needed. Despite advances in clinical tests, post-mortem evaluations often provide useful, sometimes unexpected, information to understand the course of the decedent's disease. The autopsy service also supports Institution Review Board (IRB)-approved clinical research studies. The administrative services related to autopsies are managed by the Office of Decedent Affairs supervised by Mr. Keith Ellis. For questions, please contact the Decedent Affairs office: (310) 825-7846
